Campus Space by Jen Stanfel

I designed my story cube to reflect the changes UW has made and continues to make on campus space. As the university grows, the campus space we have now is used to fit an increasing number of people and activities, and buildings to house these people and activities. Walkers have at present, mostly, a pleasant, comfortable amount of space between buildings, with lots of open, flattish areas as opposed to being claustrophobically walled in between buildings . Walkers are crowded at very few points on campus paths. However, as the university builds on open areas, comfortable walking space will be diminished and people will become more crowded on campus. I believe that the university’s growth is progressive in that with more buildings it will be able to house more people, and the learning and research opportunities that come with them – however, this progress will come at the cost of increased visual clutter and less comfortable personal space. I plan to use my story cube to draw attention to the space we have now, and how temporary it is. Though we and future students will grow accustomed to a campus with less open space, our campus experience will never be the same.
