My story cube is a study of the distribution of patterns and materials, and their function and significance toward the University of Waterloo campus. There’s five photos included in the cube which show some sources of pattern and repitition. These examples of patterning don’t serve any significant functional purpose, but simply draw the viewers eye visually and make us wonder why, who and what created these impressions.
The images that I chose to focus on were patterns that were part of buildings which didn’t appear to serve any purpose at all at the time. It makes you begin to wonder who made the decision to include these markings and why they chose the materials used to create these arrangements.
When I step back and consider the impressions I get from the UW campus, it makes me realize that it’s lacking a sense of liberation. Order is one of the first words I would use to describe the buildings and architecture around the campus. There’s a shortage of visually appealing architecture on campus and therefore the scarce patterns and unique materials become unusual yet absorbing at the same time.
