Alice Angus of Proboscis led a 2 part StoryCube workshop with the class that brought together each student’s StoryCube from Assignment 1. Students had created a cube based on an examination of the UW campus and used these to engage in discussions that evolved through the building of narrative structures and landscapes. the goal was to identify key collective themes and areas of interest for further research and exploration. In the first half of the session, the class was divided into three groups to identify three themes or trajectories. These ideas were shared and recorded on the chalkboard. The first half of the session ended with a group discussion of themes and the results were also mapped on the board. The failure of the design of the campus, a concern for better “connections” between spaces and the lack of positive social space for students were some of the key themes that emerged. The aesthetics of the built environment were also explored reflecting both a critique of the campus and a desire to identify places and spaces that do work.

In the second half of the class, the whole group worked together on further developing the identified themes. This exercise will be the foundation of Assignment 2, group projects that will continue to focus on the campus environment with an emphasis on social, cultural and historical issues.
